Preparing a place for the Eucharist is preparing for a family celebration:  cleaning house; decorating suitably for the guest of honor with flowers, candles and hangings; setting the table with the best linens and dishes; dressing up. The whole task of getting ready to celebrate acquires overtones of holiness.  This is the most beautiful and sacred lay ministry of the church.

Each Altar Guild follows general guidelines to describe their duties which could enable a member to go to any Episcopal church and be of help in preparation. Included with the general guidelines are traditions of the particular parish and priest.

Setting the table for the celebration of the holy Eucharist is a weekly task. Preparing the church for weddings, baptisms, funerals, and confirmations are among the Altar Guild duties, and our busiest and most joyful times of the year are Christmas and Easter.
